Concert hall organ

An organ in a concert hall serves to support the symphony orchestra. The concert organ – or concert hall organ – is derived from the church organ and is in terms of construction and sound close to this arrangement. However, there is an essential difference between an organ for a concert hall and an organ for a church. Mixtuur explains.

A church organ is a pipe organ located in a church building. The church organ is used to accompany choir and congregational singing during the church service. In terms of construction, the church organ looks a lot like a concert organ, however, a church organ often has no swell boxes to achieve a transition from soft to loud sound.

A concert hall organ is also a pipe organ, but its purpose is to enhance the sounds of the symphony orchestra. Concert organs generally have swell boxes, which ensure that the organ can keep up with the orchestra in terms of the intensity of the sound.

Well-known concert organs

A concert organ is used in several concert halls in the Netherlands. Well-known concert organs can be found in the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, in De Doelen in Rotterdam and in the Music Center in Enschede. Did you know that the Great Hall in the Royal Concertgebouw is considered one of the three best concert halls in the world for symphonic music? In the Great Hall hangs a large concert organ that is used to support and amplify the symphony orchestra.

A concert hall organ with Hauptwerk

Existing concert organs can be supplemented with Hauptwerk to complement the existing voices with new sounds. This is a so-called hybrid organ, also called combination organ. By building Hauptwerk on an existing organ, the existing pipe organ is preserved. It is the perfect solution if you don’t want the voices of your current organ to be lost. By choosing Hauptwerk you suddenly have many more possibilities, you can play on various world famous organs, simply by leaving in a sample set.
