The pipe organ is a classical instrument. It’s one of the rare antique instruments that will be used nowadays. You can still find them in church. The differents pipes of the organ make their own sounds because of the mechanic out of the air blast. The number of pipes will vary in every kind of organ. Sometimes, the big organs will have ten thousands of pipes that will be operated by hundreds of stop knobs.

The history of the pipe organ

The so-called ‘water organ’ was introduced around 246 years B.C. In 757 the ‘classic pipe organ’ was back and replaced in the European churches. The pipe organ supported the chorus in the churches. There were big and small organs. The small ones, also the processional organs, were used for secular music. Besides that, there’s a big organ, like the swallow’s nest organ. These are the big organs and they’re hanging on the wall in the church. In the course of the years the organ was improved every time. The mechanic changed which cause polyphonic playing. That resulted in a graceful melody. The organ also got registers who caused unique sounds and effects.

Every pipe organ has a different sound. This is because they’re not in a serie. Each organ is unique en fits in a matching room. The pipe organ gets its sound from the pipes. Every key is based on one specific sound so you have different pipes to get different sounds. It can also be that one key activates differents pipes but this is dependent on the activated registers.
