Making a Hauptwerk organ
Do you like to begin using Hauptwerk? You need to get some essential components to play on a Hauptwerk instrument, only the software is not enough. We would like to give an overview of all components you need to make a home setup.
A keyboard with MIDI software
For using Hauptwerk you need to have a MIDI playtable. MIDI is a way to communicate digitally between two electronic music instruments. The software works with digital commands who mention which pitch and volume the instrument needs to follow. When you touch a key on your keyboard or organ, there will be a MIDI-signal sent to the computer, which converts the signal into the right sound.
The cheapest option is a keyboard with MIDI-connection. Of course you can choose for a digital Mixtuur organ, including built-in Hauptwerk software. The third and also last option is to compose all components, like the keyboard blocks, keyboards, pedals and MIDI hardware. But watch out: this is only spent on the real specialists.
A PC or laptop
A PC or laptop is necessary to have, so you can install Hauptwerk software. Besides that it’s necessary to have enough memory, think of 16 GB. This is because some sample sets take up a lot of memory. Besides that, the strength of the processor is also an important thing. This says how many registers you can play at the same time. Therefore: play close attention to the technical specifications of your computer so you can determine if you can download Hauptwerk.
A sample set is a collection of all sounds of each key of a certain orgel. In this way every sort of touch on the keyboard will be recorded. Besides that the samples will be connected to the included registers and manuals. A sample set includes all the information you need to give a realistic view of an organ.
MIDI interface
A keyboard including MIDI software is also necessary if you want to play. However, you need to make a connection between the keyboard and PC. Therefore you can use the MIDI cable, which is useful to make a connection between the midi-out gate of the computer. The MIDI interface is responsible for sending the sound to the soundcard and speakers. Now you know which software you need to use Hauptwerk, you only have to get it by yourself. For Hauptwerk Lite you pay $9.99 dollar in a month or $110 dollar in a year.
Are you interested in the functionalities of Hauptwerk Advanced? Then you pay €695 euro. In the end you also need the samplesets of your favorite organs, so you can load them and play. The price of the different sample sets vary between €19 till €1.395.
Start with Hauptwerk
As you can see it takes a lot to build a Hauptwerk organ. It’s a nice challenge to build a working Hauptwerk playtable, but reality says that it’s paired with high costs. Besides that, you are going to miss the appearance you have with a classic pipe organ if you go for a self made Hauptwerk organ.
